Confirm the person before relying on a custody match

  • Verify the person. Check details that distinguish the intended person from namesakes: compare birth date, court or agency location, event timing, and record number and preserve the identifier that makes the match credible.
  • Confirm the outcome. Separate current status from historical record evidence. This prevents a historical event from being presented as a current status.
  • Check image access. Check whether the responsible custody agency actually publishes or releases booking photographs. A locator can exist even when no public booking image is provided.

Go from the booking agency to the photograph

For a booking photograph, first identify the county and agency that booked the person from the arrest location, booking number and date. Open that agency’s official jail or sheriff page and look for its inmate-search or booking-photo instructions; follow an app link only from the official agency. Search with the agency’s supported identifiers and match the image’s booking details to the person, not just the name. A custody directory is only a route to the agency, not a photograph source.

Onslow County, North Carolina is an illustration, not a national service: the Sheriff’s Office FAQ says its free official app displays mugshots under “Jail Info,” while its website does not publish mugshots. Use that route only for an Onslow County Jail booking. The same FAQ says requests for arrests made by another local police agency must go to that agency.

If the agency posts no image, contact its records unit with the booking or incident number and date. Ask whether the booking photograph is releasable to you, which request process applies, and whether identification, a fee or redaction is required. If access is restricted, stop at that boundary; a missing photograph does not disprove the booking or establish the case outcome.
